As parents and educators, one of our most important responsibilities is to help young children develop the skills they need to understand and manage their own emotions. Teaching preschoolers to manage their emotions effectively has a profound impact on how well a child manages growing up and life as an adult.

Continue reading to learn about the importance preschoolers learn to recognize and manage their emotions, how you can positively reinforce children's efforts to manage their emotions, and the method I used with these preschooler emotion star charts to support to notice and reward preschool efforts.

Teaching preschoolers to manage their emotions goes far beyond teaching kids what acceptable behavior is. Providing kids the tools they need to recognize and manage their emotions provides them with a life long skill. While preschoolers have easy and obvious rules to follow when they are young, not every social situation is black and white.

The Importance of Recognizing and Rewarding Emotional Management in Preschoolers

Not every emotional response is predictable because the nuance of every social situation isn't easy to understand. Throw into the mix that every child has different strengths. Society is busy telling children what they cannot do.

We forget to point out and tell children “do more of that”. That's why I came up with the star chart, as it allows both the educator and the child to celebrate small successes.

Recognizing and validating preschoolers' emotions is an essential component of their emotional development. Preschoolers are still learning to regulate their emotions and may struggle to understand and express their feelings.

As parents and educators, it is crucial to acknowledge and validate their emotions to help them feel heard and understood. By recognizing their emotions, children feel validated, and this builds their skills and confidence.

When preschoolers recognize their emotions, they can understand them. When they understand their emotions, they can manage them. This sets them up for success.

Positive reinforcement rewards desired behavior so it will be repeated. In child development, positive reinforcement is helpful for encouraging behavior and children learn to manage their emotions and gain confidence.

By recognizing and rewarding positive behaviors, preschoolers are more likely to continue those behaviors and develop a sense of accomplishment.

  • Expressing Emotion: Each student receives a star chart and colors a star when he or she expresses their emotion appropriately (emotional regulation).
  • Small Groups/Siblings: The group or siblings receive a star chart and color a star for whatever emotion or behavior the teacher or parent stipulates.
